Living places talks on Architecture and Landscape

September 18th 2024

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to talk with two architecture studios that work by creating situations and sensations: SCOB and WALK.

Lesley Lokko explained in a recent text that the Zulu term for an architect is umqambi wesino, which could be translated as “magician of space”, “maker of a situation”, or “maker of a sensation”.

Citing Lokko, the architect has the task of “resolving the tension between the imaginary and the ‘real’ before the built form emerges.” And it is precisely when the built form emerges that Living Places comes into play, seeking to capture this magic through audiovisual means.

SCOB and WALK work in those moments of tension.

In addition to the recognition that both studios have earned, it’s worth noting that Oscar and Sergi (SCOB) dedicate themselves to research, which they share through teaching. In Oscar’s case, he shares his passion with wider audiences through writing stories about landscapes. Moreover, they have ventured into documentary filmmaking to share the experiences they’ve lived through their creative processes.

Juan (WALK) enjoys wandering through cities, observing how people behave in public spaces and how these spaces shape their lives. This passion has allowed him to create works that integrate natural environments, infrastructure, and urban design into a holistic solution.
