In this session with the historian Gustau Nerín, the researcher Anyely Marín Cisneros and anthropologist Andrés Antebi we discussed the memory of Spain’s colonial past and the role that Catalonia played in it.
In recent years, interest in colonial memory has notably increased. Academic research has been joined by cultural, institutional, artistic, and civic initiatives aimed at shedding light on a past that is still surrounded by silences today. The incorporation of voices from the diasporas of countries that were once colonized has energized a crucial debate to better understand our past and its impact on the present. At a time when Europe’s colonial pasts are being questioned across the continent, what has been done to recover the memory of Spanish colonialism and the role that Catalonia played in it? What new projects are currently being developed in research and creation to advance in this area?
