Crossed Colonization: Housing Development in Urban Peripheries

January 2015

Within the framework of the research group GAMUC, African Modern Urban Challenge in Former Spanish Colonies(2014-2020), we contributed to the publication edited by Carlos Nunes with the chapter titled “Crossed Colonization: Housing Development in Urban Peripheries. The Hispanic-African Colonial Territories, 1912 – 1976 – 2013″. As a research team, GAMUC studied the contemporary urban challenges in northern Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, resulting from the Spanish colonial occupation.

From a postcolonial perspective, GAMUC focused on analyzing the power relations underlying the production and management of urban space and the architecture of African cities. Additionally, GAMUC addressed the study of urban peripheries as scenarios where the city is understood globally, and explored the issue of housing as a common foundation for current urban challenges.
